Winged Sprints on Asphalt Racing Series (WSoA)
Race #12- Columbus Motor Speedway - October 8, 2005

Press Release, by Heather Garrepy

Scott Picks up First WSoA Win

Columbus, Ohio (October 8) -Regular dirt race, Bryan Scott picked up his first Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) victory Saturday night in the twenty-five lap feature event at Columbus Motor Speedway after race leader Danny Brown took a hard hit into the fourth turn wall on lap twenty-four.

At the drop of the green, outside pole sitter, Mark Pridemore took the early lead. By lap six, two time WSoA Champion, Danny Brown had caught up to Pridemore and overtook the lead on lap seven. Pridemore and Doug Berryman would race side by side for second position before Pridemore would slip high on the racetrack and loose several positions. Once Berryman got past Pridemore, he began chasing down Brown. Meanwhile, rookie drivers, Bryan Nuckles and Trent Stephens were racing side by side
for third. The field would be slowed by a caution on lap fourteen for Mike McVettawith mechanical problems.

On the restart, Berryman was right on Brown's tail tank followed by Stephens. Behind the trio, dirt regulars Bryan Scott and Mike Linder were challenging Nuckles for forth. However, on lap seventeen the caution waved once again for Cortney Gallogly who came to a stop in turn four.

When racing resumed, Scott got the jump over Nuckles for forth, leaving Nuckles and Linder to race side by side. On the eighteenth circuit, Scottpassed Stephens for third and quickly closing in on Brown and Berryman. Within several laps, Scott had caught up with Berryman, while the duo battled for the runner up spot, leader Brown pulled away from the duo. However on lap twenty-four Brown would run over the tire a lapped car and shoot head first in to the turn four retaining wall. Brown was transported to a local hospital for precautionary measures, but was later released with nothing more then minor scraps and bruises.

After a lengthy delay in cleaning up the accident, the green and white flag waved together for Berryman, who inherited the lead. However Berryman's time in the lead would be short lived as Scott passed him going into turn one. At the line it was Scott, Berryman, Stephens, Linder and Nuckles rounding out the top five.

Long night of Cavalcade Day 1 Racing
by Travis Apple

After two caution filled races, the sprints almost went green flag to checkered in a 30-lap feature. A late caution came out but that didn’t stop Frank Neill, who had a great car as he lapped over half the field, earn his first career victory at Mansfield Speedway.

“We had a great car and we were able to stay out of the way of lap traffic and get it,” said Neill. “We came close several times this year but we could never get it, it’s a great feeling to finally get one.”

The rest of the top five was Tyler Dunn (2nd), Tim Buchanan (3rd), Doug Berryman (4th), and Adam McLellan (5th). Neill was also a heat winner and Martin Robinson was the other heat winner. Dunn was the fastest qualifier as he set a new track record with a time of 14.155.

Leedy, McCune win big at Fall National at MMS
By Travis Apple

In the 30-lap sprint feature, Jimmy McCune jumped to the lead of pack on lap 1 and he would never look back as he took home a $6,000 first place check. There were three cautions and each time McCune got off to a great restart and sped away from the field.

However, the fastest qualifier Tyler Dunn, who had drawn a 12 car invert, started from that 12th position and made it all the way up to second place. Frank Neill finished in third, Bryan Scott in fourth, and Tim Buchanan in fifth. The Sprint results are unofficial as they were still being checked at press time. “I would like to thank the Rebman Truck Services for giving me a ride,” stated McCune. “I knew that if we could get to a lead we would be in good shape because we had a great car. I knew the guys were there at the end but I was just running as hard as I could.”
“We had a really fast car and I think if we would have had a couple more laps we could have come close to passing,” added Dunn. “It was definitely a race of patience with the lapped cars and sometimes second is better than nothing.”
Dunn was the fastest qualifier on Friday with a time of 14.248. The Sprints didn’t have any other mains besides the 35 car starting field. On Friday, Jason Kemp, Jimmy Taylor, Mike Linder, and Dustin Keegan were all heat winners.

After a huge weekend at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, the track will have a week of rest and will be back in action for another big event weekend on October 1st and 2nd. It’s the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway Cavalcade. On Saturday, day 1, the ISMA SuperModifieds, the 305 Sprints, Late Models, and Pure Stocks will all be in action. On Sunday, day 2, the MSA SuperModifieds, HOSS 410 Sprints, Modifieds, and the Stockers will be in action. Winged Sprints on Asphalt Racing Series (WSoA)
Race #11 - Columbus Motor Speedway - September 10, 2005

Press Release, by Heather Garrepy

Rookie Gets First Win

Columbus, Ohio (September 10) - Years ago ABC's Wide Word of Sports would start each broadcast out with moniker "The trill of victory, the agony of defeat." Nothing could be more appropriate to describe the Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) twenty-five lap feature event at Columbus Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 10th. Point leader Jonathan Kettlewell dominated the first twenty-one lap before his right-rear tire went flat - handing the lead over to rookie of the year candidate, Bryan Nuckles, giving him is first career sprint car win.

At the start of the feature, it was the father/son duo of Craig Sharfenberg Senior and Junior leading the field to the green. Sharfenberg Jr would get the initial lead; however his position out front would be short lived as sixth place Jonathan Kettlewell would overtake the lead going into the first turn of lap two. From that point on it appeared that Kettlewell had the car to beat as he quickly established a full straight-a-way lead over second place of Bryan Nuckles. Lapped cars proved
to be no obstacle for Kettlewell either, as his car was fast in every grove of the track, allowing him to go two and three wide to pass lapped traffic.

The first yellow of the race would fly on lap twelve for pole sitter Sharfenberg Sr, who slowed in the infield; he would be done for the evening. On the restart, Kettlewell once again jumped out to an impressive lead, as three lapped cars were between him and Nuckles. However, racing would once again be slowed as Jeff Gibson hit the turn one pit entrance gate hard. Gibson was uninjured but would be done for the evening with extensive damage done to his racer. When the green flag flew again, Kettlewell once again got a jump on the field, however Nuckles was not going to let him get away, and followed several car lengths behind. However, on lap twenty, Kettlewell began slowing on the backstretch, and on lap twenty one, would come to a complete stop in turn one with a flat right rear tire. This gave the lead to Nuckles, who would lead the remaining four laps unchallenged. Behind him, Rebman Motorsports teammates, Tyler Dunn and Jason Kemp were battling side by side for second
place, but coming around for the checkers; Dunn would spin into the infield and end up ninth. Following Nuckles to the strip was Kemp, Danny Brown, Terry Gibson and Jim Payne - who earned his best finish of the year.

Jonathan Kettlewell had fast time with a lap of 12.455 seconds, and heat race wins went to Jeff Gibson and Jason Kemp.

The next race for the WSoA will be on October 8th at Columbus Motor Speedway for the Open Wheel Oktoberfest in conjunction with the USAC National Midget Series. For the next several laps, Kettlewell remained right behind Michael, but it wasn't until lap twenty-three that he would put the pressure on Michael for the top spot. For the remaining two laps, the duo

Winged Sprints on Asphalt Racing Series (WSoA)
Race #8 - Columbus Motor Speedway, Saturday, August 6, 2005

Press Release, by Heather Garrepy

Columbus, Ohio (August 6) - Sprint car rookie, Trent Stephens took his second checkered flag of the season, in the twenty-five lap, Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) Racing Series feature, Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway.

When the green flag flew, it was outside pole-sitter, Aaron Price getting the early lead, over pole-sitter, Doug Berryman. While Price slowly pulled away from the rest of the field, Berryman and Stephens would battle side by side for second for several laps. By lap five, Stephens had overtaken second from Berryman and was quickly closing in on Price.

On lap seven, the duo of Price and Stephens crossed the start/finish line side-by-side, but the next time by, Stephens would have a several car length lead over Price. Meanwhile, Danny Brown, who started eighth, was on the move and by lap ten had taken over third place from Berryman and was closing in on teammate and son, Price. With Price getting caught up in lapped traffic, Brown shortened the distance to only several car lengths. The father/son duo started to put on an exciting battle for second, before the caution flew on lap thirteen for Paul Buckingham who went spinning into the infield. On the restart, Brown would get a better restart then Price and take second.

Lapped traffic and experience once again played in Brown's favor as leader Stephens came upon lapped traffic on lap 21 allowing Brown to close in on Stephens. However, the night would turn from good to bad for Highside Motorsports as Brown looped it coming out of turn four on lap 21, then on the restart, Price who was looking very impressive in his second year of racing, slapped the backstretch retaining wall, ending his evening.

When the field finally went back to green, Stephens once again pulled away from the field. Behind him, Chris Michael and Jonathan Kettlewell put on an exciting battle for second, with Michael coming out on top. Kettlewell crossed the line third; Dave Saxer put on an impressive run and ended up fourth, followed by Jeff Gibson. After spinning out, Brown battled his way back to finish eighth.

Dunn Win Big at Mansfield Motorsports Speedway
By TRAVIS APPLE

When it came to the Mt. Dew Xtreme Sprints, another huge win took place and that victory had a couple dollar signs by the name. Mansfield Motorsports Speedway decided to give the fastest qualifier the chance to start at the tail of the 25 lap feature race and if they were able to move all the way up front and win, they would win $1700 all together. The fastest qualifier was points leader Jimmy Taylor and he decided to take the challenge. However, he wrecked in the heat race and that gave way to Tyler Dunn who was the second fastest qualifier.

Dunn in only his sixth race ever in a Sprint car decided his car was good enough and rose to the challenge. As Adam McLellan quickly jumped to the head of the pack and led the first 17 laps, Dunn also quickly moved up in the field and by lap 13 he was in second place. After a caution flag came out, Dunn scooted ahead of McLellan on the restart and gained a big lead and took it all the way to victory lane.

“I knew I had a good car and this just feels awesome,” added Dunn. “I dedicated this race to Don Townsend, he has taught me everything I know. This is just overwhelming that I was able to win my first ever Sprint race and win this big race as I was able to get to the front after starting at the tail.”

Rounding out the top five in the feature was McClellan (2nd), Cortney Gallogly (3rd), Jeff Gibson (4th), Dustin Keegan (5th). The heat races were won by Jason Kemp and Dunn. Taylor’s fastest qualifying time was 14.461.

Don Townsend’s 77R car was back on the track for the very last time on Sunday as his son Don Townsend Jr. competed in it. After the race the number 77R was retired. After a big doubleheader weekend, Mansfield Motorsports Speedway will return to action next Saturday, August 6 for Regular Show #15. Winged Sprints on Asphalt Racing Series (WSoA)
Race #6 - Columbus Motor Speedway, Saturday, July 23, 2005

Press Release, by Heather Garrepy

Brown Dominates Columbus - Again

Columbus, Ohio (July 23) - Danny Brown picked up his second Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) feature win of the season, Saturday night at Columbus Motor Speedway, leading all twenty-five laps. In victory lane, Brown dedicated this win to Don Townsend Sr, who lost his life two weeks again in a racing accident.

"This win is especially sweet tonight" said an emotional Brown in victory lane. "Donnie Sr taught me how to drive, he's the reason I'm standing here in victory lane tonight. He was on class act."

Brown took the lead at the drop of the green over polestitter David Saxer and within several laps had established almost a straight away lead over the rest of the field. On lap five, the yellow would wave for the 105 of Paul Buckingham who went spinning into the infield. On the restart, Brown once again jump out to an impressive lead, however the race for fifth place would keep the fans on the edge of their seats as Mike McVetta, Todd Buchanan, Bryan Nuckles and Trent Stephens battled side by side for several laps, at times going two and three wide on the narrow third-mile
track.

The field would be slowed again on lap ten as Craig Sharfenberg Sr, in his first race back after suffering a heart attack in May, slammed hard into the turn four wall. Sharfenberg Sr was uninjured, but the same could not be said for his racer.

The field would go back to green for five laps before the caution flew again for Craig Sharfenberg Jr. On the restart, Buchanan proved to be the man on the move as he easily took third place over from Doug Berryman, and quickly set his sights on the second place of Jeff Gibson. The forth and final yellow would wave on lap twenty-three for Bryan Nuckles who spun out in turn three. When the green flag flew for the final time, with Brown out-front, it was Gibson and Buchanan putting on the show battling for second place, going three-wide around lapped cars, with Buchanan edging Gibson out by a nose at the checkered flag. Mike McVetta came across the line fourth, followed by Jonathan Kettlewell.

Todd Buchanan has fast time on the field during qualifying with a lap of 12.438, with the dash going to Terry Gibson. Jeff Gibson and Danny Brown took the checkers in the heat races.

The next race for the WSoA will be on July 30th at Sandusky Speedway, in conjunction with the Hi-Miler Nationals. For more information please visit the WSoA website at www.wsoa.us

**Pit Side Notes**

*Don Townsend Jr, a regular in the sportsman division at Columbus, was pulling double duty tonight driving his sportsman as well as a sprint car, in memory of his late father.

When asked his motivation for strapping into a sprint car, something he has not done in two years, his reply was: "It's what Dad would have wanted, I'm not out here to prove anything tonight, just to fulfill Dad's dream. I'm racing with his gloves tonight, so hopefully he will give me a hand."

Townsend Jr had an impressive run with a 8th quick time, a 4th place heat race finish and 11th in the main in the sprint car, and a second place finish in the sportsman main. After tonight's race, the number 77r will be retired by Rebman Motorsports, Don Sr's car owner for the last several years.

Free Fan Appreciation Day brought great crowd and great racing
by Travis Apple

In the final race of the night, it was a very good race and very heart warming. The Mountain Dew Xtreme Sprints took the track for the first time since racing legend Don Townsend passed away in an accident.

In the race, Adam McLellan led the first 21 laps and then points leader Jimmy Taylor took the lead and then the white flag. The sprint car drivers decided to honor the race on the white flag lap and give Don Townsend the checkered flag. Even when it came to victory lane honors, Taylor stopped several feet short of the victory lane because he believed it belonged to Don. “Don taught me how to race and we are going to miss him a lot,” added Taylor. “We’re going to go and keep racing because I know that’s what Don wants us to do. We are all so glad and we want to thank everyone for their support and donations. I was just glad we could put on a great race for him.”

Rounding out the top fiver was McLellan in second, Tyler Dunn in third, Jason Kemp in fourth, and Frank Neill in fifth. Kemp and Dunn were the heat winners. Taylor was the fastest qualifier at 14.576.

by Heather Garrepy

It only took sixteen-year old Trent Stephens five races to claim that ever elusive first win as he took home the checkers in the twenty-five lap, Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) feature event at Sandusky Speedway tonight.

"It is great to finally win one, I've had two seconds, and a third so far this year so I've  been very close several times" said Stephens in victory lane.

Once the track retuned to action, it would an exciting five lap dash to the end, as Todd Buchanan would quickly get by the lapped cars that were between him and Stephens. Brown Dominated Columbus in a Back-up Car
by Heather Garrepy

Winged Sprints on Asphalt Racing Series (WSoA)
Race #3 - Columbus Motor Speedway, Saturday, May 07, 2005

Danny Brown picked up his first win of the season, Saturday night at Columbus Motor Speedway in the twenty-five lap, Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) Racing Series feature. Brown was running his back up car, usually piloted by Aaron Price, after destroying the front end of his primary ride Friday at Toledo.

"This is awesome, I'm very lucky to have a team like this," said Brown in victory lane. "With tearing up our primary car, tonight was the first time I ever turned a lap in this car, I just got to thank my guys. We went from zero to hero this weekend"

Terry Gibson jumped out to an early lead and appeared to be the man to beat as he quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. While all eyes were on rookie Bryan Nuckles, who was quickly working his way through the field from his seventh starting spot, battle with Jonathan Kettlewell and Brad Keckler for third, Brown slowly erased the distance that Gibson has made. Brown would take over the top spot on the eleventh circuit, and begin to pull away.

The first caution of the night would wave on lap thirteen for Nuckles who spun out on the backstretch. When racing action resumed, Brown was quick off the line and once again pulled away from the rest of the field. However, the distance would be short lived as the yellow waved once again on the next lap for Jeff Gibson.

On the restart, Brown, T. Gibson and Jonathan Kettlewell would pull away from the field, with Gibson and Kettlewell putting on an exciting battle for the runner up spot. Racing action would halt for the third and final time on lap eighteen when Nuckles came to a stop on the front stretch with a blown front tire, ending his evening. When the green flag waved again,
it was Brown, Gibson and Kettlewell in the top three, where they would remain until the finish. First year WSoA racers, Brad Keckler and Paul Hemrick Jr rounded out the top five.

Bryan Nuckles had quick time for the evening. Brown once again picked up the dash and a heat race victory, with the other heat race checkered going to Terry Gibson.

Championship points after this weekends races have Bryan Nuckles with a three point lead over Terry Gibson. Jeff Gibson is third, just two points behind his brother Terry.

The next race for the WSoA will be on May 28th at Midvale Speedway. For more information please visit the WSoA website at www.wsoa.us

Great Racing at MMS Before the Big NASCAR Race
By Travis Apple

With less than a week before the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series invades the Mansfield Motorsports Speedway, the weekly racing action on Saturday, May 7 was very exciting. The track featured the Budweiser Late Models, Advance Auto Parts Modifieds, the Mountain Dew Xtreme Sprints, Ace Engineering Pure Stocks, and the Kris Radio Quality Stockers.

The last two races saw the same driver lead every single lap. First in the Mountain Dew Sprints, Todd Buchanan was able to lead from start to finish. Veteran driver Don Townsend was able to catch up with him on lap 23 of the 25-lap feature but Buchanan was able to hold Townsend off for the victory.

"This is a very fast speedway and I love to race here," added Buchanan. "It's definitely one of my favorite tracks and I saw Don in the shadow and I knew it would come down to the end. It feels really good and hopefully this will be a win I can build on."

After last week's several cautions and bad collisions, this week's race didn't have any cautions. Townsend ended up finishing in second, Frank Neill third, Jimmy Taylor fourth, and Jason Kemp fifth. Taylor was driving a replacement car after his primary ride was damaged severely after the first turn crash a week ago. Taylor and Townsend won the heat races and Townsend was the fastest qualifier with a time of 14.701.

By Heather Garrepy

Tim Buchanan recorded his first Toledo Speedway win Friday night in the twenty-five lap Winged Sprints on Asphalt (WSoA) Racing Series main event. The win was also Buchanan's first career WSoA victory.

"I love this track, it's very driver friendly," said a very excited Buchanan in victory lane. "I can't say that this [driving] is easy, but when dad puts a car like that under me, it is."

Jeff Gibson took the initial lead over pole-sitter Brad Wade and quickly pulled away from the field. Danny Brown took over second spot a few laps into the main with Tim Buchanan in tow, quickly closing the gap that Gibson had established. Brown was uninjured, but extensive damage to the front end of his ride ended his evening and chance at victory.

On the restart, Gibson tried all that he could to hold of Buchanan, but Buchanan clearly had the car to beat. Gibson would challenge once again for the lead at the halfway point when Buchanan came up on lapped traffic, but would have to settle for second. Mike McVetta came across the strip third, followed by rookie Bryan Nuckles and Doug Berryman.

They were also able to see sprint car driver Jimmy Taylor of Mansfield pick up his second consecutive victory as the Budweiser Late Models, Advance Auto Parts Modified, Mountain Dew Xtreme Sprints, Ace Engineering Pure Stocks, and Kris Radio Quality Stockers were all in action.

For the second week in a row, Taylor was able to pick up the fastest qualifier award with a time of 14.231 and then go on to win the 25-lap feature for the Mountain Dew Xtreme Sprints that included four cautions. He was able to win the second heat and in the feature Taylor started eighth and continued his way to the top. With five laps remaining, leader Don Townsend of Columbus blew his engine and that made way for Taylor to lead the rest of the way.

“I really like this track and we are running much better than we ever did on dirt,” stated Taylor. “We continued to work hard this week and we’re just going to do the best we can all season long.”

Coming in second place was Tim Buchanan with Frank Neill, Todd McQuillen and Jeff Gibson rounding out the top five. Jason Kemp was the winner of the first heat race.
